Australia – Asbestos – Model WHS asbestos framework under review
Safe Work Australia has published a discussion paper for its review of the asbestos framework in the model WHS laws. Stakeholder feedback is sought on how to improve identifying and assessing risks of asbestos and asbestos containing materials, lowering the workplace exposure standard, updating the NOHSC:3003, improving asbestos management and control measures, and strengthening training and competency.

Australia – WHS – Model WHS best practice review summary published
Safe Work Australia has released a summary of feedback of the best practice review of the model WHS laws. Key themes include a greater focus on emerging risks such as digital work, AI and climate-related hazards, difficulty navigating differences between jurisdictions and its enforcement, and the desire for simple and industry-based laws. The final report is expected to be presented to WHS ministers in August 2026.

Queensland – Resources – Amendments to reform RSHQ introduced
The QLD Parliament has introduced a Bill that would reform Resources Safety and Health QLD (RSHQ), following a review of the regulator. The Bill is being reviewed by a Parliamentary Committee and if passed would introduce a Governing Board for RSHQ and abolish the role of Commissioner, as well as reinstating the function of the mining advisory committees to review and provide advice on legislation, standards and guidelines.
