Australia – Eligibility of solar batteries under Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme announced

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has announced that the Renewable Energy (Electricity) Regulations 2001 will be amended to allow solar battery systems to be eligible under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme from 1 July 2025. The amendments will enable households and small businesses to receive a discount on the upfront cost of installing small-scale battery systems.

New South Wales – Changes to radiation legislation proposed

The NSW EPA is proposing changes to the Protection from Harmful Radiation Regulation 2013 and has released a draft and regulatory impact statement for feedback. The review aims to ensure the Regulation effectively protects people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, while still maintaining safe and beneficial uses.

South Australia – Biodiversity Bill introduced

The SA Government has introduced the Biodiversity Bill 2025 to Parliament, which, if passed, would be South Australia’s first Biodiversity Act and would consolidate biodiversity matters previously included across several pieces of legislation (see previous Bulletin here). The proposed legislation includes various provisions to improve the protection of South Australia’s native animals and plants, such as a new general duty, increased penalties, and new processes related to threatened species and communities.
