Australia – Review of Recycling and Waste Reduction Act underway

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has announced that it is undertaking a review of the Recycling and Waste Reduction Act 2020. The review will examine the Act’s operation, determine whether its objects have been achieved, and make recommendations to improve its efficiency in addressing circular economy needs, resource recovery and waste challenges.

South Australia – Biosecurity Bill passed

The South Australian Government has announced that the Biosecurity Bill 2024 has passed Parliament (see previous Bulletin here). The new Act will implement a modern framework for managing biosecurity risks, including the establishment of a general biosecurity duty. The Act will also consolidate requirements from several existing Acts. A commencement date is yet to be proclaimed.

Victoria – Reforms to Biosecurity legislation proposed

Agriculture Victoria has sought feedback on two proposed reforms to the state’s biosecurity framework. The reforms include introducing a general biosecurity duty for animals and plants, and improving the data quality of livestock Property Identification Codes.
