Australia – Energy use – Changes to GEMS requirements announced

The Energy and Climate Change Ministerial Council has announced reforms to the Greenhouse and Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) Program, including the introduction of minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for heat pump water heaters, and an increase to MEPS for external power supplies. Exposure drafts of the regulations are expected to be released for consultation this year.

South Australia – Climate change – Climate change risk assessment released

The Department for Environment and Water has released the 2024 Statewide Climate Change Risk and Opportunity Assessment, which consolidates current knowledge of South Australia’s climate-change impacts, risks, and opportunities across nature, infrastructure, the economy and communities. The findings of the report will be used to guide climate risk management and adaptation strategies, and will be reviewed every five years to track progress and emerging risks.

Australia – Biodiversity – New maps to assist with 30 by 30 target developed

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has announced the development of three new national maps which highlight areas of important biodiversity and ecosystem value. The new maps will assist in reaching the 30 by 30 target, which aims to protect and conserve 30% of Australia’s land by 2030.
