Australia – Amendments to National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme proposed

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is seeking feedback on proposed amendments to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme. The proposed changes include the introduction of new reporting requirements, updated emission factors, a new approach for estimating fugitive emissions from gas flaring, and amendments to wastewater methods. Comments close 11 April 2025.

South Australia – New Animal Welfare Act passed

The South Australian Government has announced that the new Animal Welfare Act has passed parliament. The Act will include increased penalties for animal cruelty, an updated definition of an animal that includes fish, and improved regulation of animal research, among other things. A commencement date is yet to be proclaimed.

Australian Capital Territory – Changes to waste management legislation proposed

The ACT Government has proposed changes to the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Act 2016 and the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Regulations 2017 to make information regarding registers for licenced waste facilities and transporters publicly available, and to remove obsolete powers regarding GPS devices on waste transporting vehicles.
