Australia – Stronger regulation for crystalline silica-containing substances published
Safe Work Australia has published draft amendments to the model WHS Regulations, which are intended to commence throughout Australia on 1 September 2024. Tighter regulations will apply when working with materials that contain at least 1% crystalline silica, with amendments relating to controlled processing, identifying processing that is high-risk, preparation of and compliance with silica risk control plans, worker training, air monitoring and health monitoring.

Australia – Commonwealth workers’ compensation scheme under review
The Australian Government has announced that the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 will be reviewed by an independent panel. The review will inform future reform of the Comcare workers’ compensation legislation. Terms of reference have been published, with consultation to be undertaken before the findings and recommendations are given to Government by mid-2025.

Western Australia – Draft petroleum regulations in development
The WA Government is drafting regulations to support the Petroleum Legislation Amendment Act 2024, which will primarily provide for the transport and storage of greenhouse gases throughout the state, and is inviting feedback. The Act is expected to commence following completion of the regulations.
