Australia – Draft legislation for climate-related financial disclosure standards released

The Australian Government has released draft legislation that will introduce mandatory requirements for large businesses and financial institutions to disclose their climate-related risks and opportunities. Feedback is sought on whether the draft legislation and explanatory materials appropriately reflect the policy intent outlined in the Policy Statement.

Tasmania – Electronic identification for sheep and goats to become mandatory

The Tasmanian Government has announced that electronic identification of sheep and goats will become mandatory from 1 January 2025, as part of Australia’s National Livestock Traceability System. The System will facilitate the traceability of animals to help limit the spread of disease and reduce the impacts of emergency animal disease outbreaks. New Regulations to implement the tracking system are being developed under the Biosecurity Act 2019, and support is available to assist with the transition.

Australia – Australia’s Strategy for Nature to be updated

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has announced plans to update Australia’s Strategy for Nature 2019-2030. The updates, which will be undertaken with all states and territories, will set national biodiversity targets and allow the government, businesses, and the community to protect and conserve Australia’s biodiversity priorities. Stakeholders will be given the opportunity to help develop these national targets.
