New South Wales – Increased penalties for dust disease announced

The Work Health and Safety Amendment Act 2023 has passed parliament, and will deliver stronger protections from dust diseases. A new asbestos notice regime is expected to commence in April 2024, while significantly increased penalties for Category 1 offences will commence from 1 July 2024. The Act will also enable increased silicosis screening, worker education and inspections, among other things.

Western Australia – New workers compensation Bill passed

The Workers Compensation and Injury Management Bill 2023 has passed parliament following its introduction in March 2023. The Bill, which will modernise WA’s workers compensation laws, is expected to commence on 1 July 2024 after regulations have been developed.

Australia – Mobile plant education campaign launched

The Office of the Federal Safety Commissioner has launched the Heavy Metal Education Campaign for working near mobile plant. Toolbox talks, safety training and posters are available.
