Australia – Bill to establish nature repair market introduced

The Australian Government has introduced the Nature Repair Market Bill 2023 to Parliament, which will establish the framework for a voluntary national nature repair market. The scheme will enable eligible landholders to be paid by a third party for protecting and restoring nature on their land through the purchase of tradeable biodiversity certificates.

Queensland – Post implementation review of SEQ koala regulations announced

The Department of Environment and Science is undertaking a post implementation review of the 2020 koala regulations under the Planning Regulation 2017, and has released a consultation document for public feedback. The review aims to evaluate if the regulations remain effective and can continue to protect koala habitat in South East Queensland (SEQ) in the long term.

Victoria – Container deposit scheme starting in November 2023

The Victorian Government has announced that Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme will start from 1 November 2023. From this day, Victorians may return used drink containers including cans, bottles and cartons, and receive a 10-cent refund. The Scheme will be coordinated by VicReturn, with Visy, TOMRA Cleanaway and Return-It as network operators, and over 600 refund collection points will be established within one year.
