Australia – Reforms to Safeguard Mechanism proposed – Open for comment until 3 and 24 February
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is undertaking further consultation on proposed reforms to the Safeguard Mechanism to help reduce industrial emissions in line with Australia’s climate targets. Feedback is sought on the proposed changes outlined in the position paper, as well as the design of the Powering the Regions Fund, which will operate alongside the reformed Safeguard Mechanism to help support decarbonisation, new industries, and workforce development. Comments close 3 and 24 February 2023.

Western Australia – Draft Mining Amendment Bill 2023 released
The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has consulted on the Draft Mining Amendment Bill 2023, which aims to amend the Mining Act 1978 following on from consequential amendments in the Land and Public Works Legislation Amendment Bill 2022. The amendments would make allocations for specified Crown land under diversification leases to coexist with other land uses, in particular, native title and resource industry land uses.
Draft nature repair market legislation released – Open for comment until 24 February
The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is seeking feedback on draft legislation that will support the establishment of a nature repair market, and encourage improved biodiversity and environmental outcomes in Australia. The proposed legislation will provide a framework that outlines governance systems, high integrity methods for undertaking projects, transparency in the market, and compliance arrangements for projects. Comments close 24 February 2023.
