Commencement date for changes to waste levy collection announced
The EPA has announced that changes to the collection of the waste levy from solid waste disposal depots will commence on 1 December 2021. The amendments to the Environment Protection Regulations 2009 and Environment Protection (Waste to Resources) Policy 2010 will implement several changes to ensure that the solid waste levy is collected in a fair and consistent manner and provides for positive resource recovery and environmental outcomes.

Penalties for contravening biosecurity laws to increase
The Australian Government has introduced legislation to Parliament that proposes to increase several penalties under the Biosecurity Act 2015. The proposed amendments provide a stronger penalty regime that will more appropriately reflect the seriousness of breaching the Act.

NSW EPA Draft regulatory strategy released – Open for comment until 31 March
The NSW EPA has released its Draft Regulatory Strategy and is inviting business, government and community feedback. The strategy details the key challenges in the areas of waste reduction, environmental degradation, climate change, ecologically sustainable development, environmental crime, protection of human health, and the EPA’s proposed approach to regulating these. Comments close on 31 March 2021.
