SafetyLaw is a web-based information service that summarises occupational health and safety (OHS) legal obligations from Australian, New Zealand and Indonesian legislation, in simple language. SafetyLaw Indonesia includes summaries in both English and Indonesian.

Obligations are conveniently grouped both according to the main sections in AS 4801 (eg. risk assessment, records) and also by workplace activity/hazard (eg. manual handling, working at height)*.

SafetyLaw:

  • is ideal for anyone who needs to know their OHS legal obligations under Australian, New Zealand or Indonesian jurisdictions, including employers, manufacturers, suppliers and employees
  • is updated every month**, with email alerts sent to an unlimited number of staff
  • references supporting documents such as codes of practice, guidelines and Australian/New Zealand Standards
  • includes an index, to aid quick finding of specific information
  • gives sufficient detail so that the information can be used directly for auditing, training or preparing work instructions
  • includes free help desk support (phone and email) to assist you with general queries about SafetyLaw or your OHS legal obligations. (This is not a legal advisory service).
SafetyLaw summaries are fully referenced with hyperlinks to full-text legislation. Where appropriate, text is hyperlinked to legal definitions and relevant third party references such as those from state/territory authorities, Australian Safety and Compensation Council, Australian/New Zealand Standards and other relevant authorities or industry bodies.

SafetyLaw satisfies AS4801 Clause 4.3.2 which requires an organisation to establish and maintain procedures to:

  1. identify and access all OHS legal obligations that apply to its activities, products and services
  2. ensure that the information is up to date
  3. disseminate relevant information to employees.

SafetyLaw is a subscription-based service, with unlimited user access. To date, we have more than 550 subscriptions.

Harmonisation
Australian governments intend to move towards harmonised OH&S legislation, based on model work health and safety legislation. Environment Essentials has already summarised the Model Work Health and Safety Act and has made it available, free of charge, to all of its SafetyLaw clients. As each jurisdiction implements its harmonised legislation, SafetyLaw for that jurisdiction will be updated to reflect the new legislation. You can stay abreast of each jurisdiction's progress through our News Bulletin (click on the OHS tab).

* Australia and New Zealand
** SafetyLaw Indonesia is updated every two months

SafetyLaw is available for all Australian jurisdictions (including Commonwealth), New Zealand and Indonesia. It includes obligations applicable to mining operations.

SafetyLaw for railway operations is available for NSW, SA, VIC and WA. Other states are in development.
