Environment Essentials is an environmental and occupational health and safety (OHS) consultancy working in all Australian states and territories, New Zealand and Indonesia. We have offices in Melbourne and Brisbane.

Our products and services
We publish comprehensive, online, simple-language summaries of obligations from environmental and OHS legislation. Our main products are EnviroLaw, SafetyLaw and HSE LawGuides.

We also specialise in legal compliance audits and helping companies to design and implement environmental and OHS management systems that are compliant with ISO14001, AS4801 and OHSAS18001.

Our clients
We assist over 700 prominent industrial companies, NGOs, tertiary education institutions, government departments, local councils and small and medium-sized enterprises in managing their OHS and environmental legal obligations.

Company history
The company was founded by managing director, Dr Tim Hamilton, in 1997. In 2000, Environment Essentials was commissioned by CSIRO to develop a plain English summary of all environmental legislation in each Australian state and territory. This work led to the development of EnviroLaw. In 2002, Chris Ie, director, joined the company and built up the company's OHS expertise. SafetyLaw was developed and went online in May 2003. HSE LawGuides followed in 2005. Since then, other services have followed.

Our staff
Our staff have qualifications in OHS, environmental management, science, law, engineering, commerce and IT. They have extensive experience in manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, petrochemicals, airlines and research as well as with government and training organisations. Our principals, Tim Hamilton and Chris Ie, have extensive experience in industry and in consulting.

Tim has more than twelve years management experience in industry and mining (BHP, Rio Tinto and Ampol) and has been an environmental consultant since 1997. He has a record of achievement in leading project development and advising on systems design, systems implementation and satisfying legal obligations. He has a PhD in chemistry and his environmental experience includes management of major environmental project teams in Australia and New Zealand, implementation and management of systems in the areas of environment (ISO 14001), quality (ISO 9002), OHS, dangerous goods, information management, IT and technical service delivery. He also has extensive environmental and compliance auditing experience.

Chris is a petroleum engineer with post graduate OHS qualifications. He has more than 20 years of industry experience in Australia and overseas, covering petroleum exploration and production, manufacturing, airlines and tertiary education. He has been involved in OHS for more than 17 years in hands-on and management positions. He has been a consultant since 2000. His OHS experience includes quantitative risk assessment, developing and implementing safety management systems, targeted risk reduction programs and legal compliance throughout Australia.
